Today, I am happy to share with you a free SVG vector file that you can use to create a circular slide rule. This file is perfect for those who want to create a laser-cut slide rule.
The file comes in two formats: AI and EPS. Simply download the one that you need and open it in your vector editing software. Then, you can start creating your very own slide rule.
If you need some inspiration, you can check out this video tutorial on how to create a circular slide rule. After you watched it, you should have no problem creating your own design.
I hope you enjoy this free file. And if you do create something with it, I would love to see it. So, please feel free to share your creations in the comments section below.
circular slide rule
A slide rule is a mechanical or electronic instrument used in engineering, architecture, and other fields to perform calculations. It’s also used as a teaching tool to teach the fundamentals of math and mechanics. With over 100 years of history, the slide rule remains an essential tool in many applications.
A slide rule is a circular grid with 24 graduated arc points. The base of the scale is generally black and the upper portion is generally red-colored. Each arc point has a pointer labeled with a unit of measurement households such as inches, millimeters, centimeters, and more. The pointer moves around the circumference of the scale, which allows users to perform calculations. To perform a calculation, the user first sets the base unit on the slide rule and then adjusts the pointer to match the unit of measurement they wish to calculate. They can then perform their calculation and move on to the next step if necessary.
Circular slide rules are useful for performing many households and financial calculations- such as calculating interest, mileage, and time. These are only a few of the many applications for which circular slide rules are used. People use them to measure length, area, volume, weight, the measurement households, and other measurements regularly performed with slide rules. Additionally, educators use slide rules in their classes to teach students how to calculate formulas and perform common tasks such as addition and subtraction. For example, in addition to homework assignments, slide rules are useful for determining vehicle mileage and calculating gas taxes.

Some notable uses of circular slide rules include:
1) Calculating mortgage payments – In this application, users first set the base unit on their circular slide rule and then adjust the pointer to match the base unit’s value. From there, they can calculate interest by multiplying the base unit by their interest rate per point along the scale. The total will be multiplied by their principal amount and then subtracted from $100 to get the monthly payment amount.
2) Calculating mileage on vehicles – In this application, users first set the base unit on their circular slide rule and then adjust the pointer to match the base unit’s value. From there, they can calculate mileage by multiplying their vehicle’s engine capacity by its speed in miles per hour along the scale (engine capacity multiplied by speed gives mileage). Next, they must multiply that by their trip time along each leg of their journey to get the total mileage traveled per leg. From there, they can subtract any spare tire needed to maintain stability while driving down that leg if necessary.
3) Calculating time – In this application, users first set the base unit on their circular slide rule and then adjust the pointer to match the base unit’s value. From there, they can calculate time by multiplying their desired completion date by 24 hours along the scale (24 hours multiplied by desired completion date equals one day). From there, subtract any time required for interruptions such as meals or bathroom breaks along with any lost wages due to working overtime or part-time hours.
Although slide rules have been around for decades, regular use is still uncommon due to their complexity. However, those who know how can benefit greatly from its use in many applications. For example, developers use them during project planning; architects use them when drafting building plans; engineers use them for designing automobiles, and educators use them when grading homework assignments or preparing lessons for classes. A slide rule isn’t necessary for everyone but those who understand its uses will truly appreciate it!
